Ninety-Fourth Day of School

In Science today, we began our discussion of water interaction with heat to make weather. Later in the week we will have knowledge of the 3 main elements of weather (tested) along with an additional weather influencing element. Don't forget to ask a Room 11 student you know.

In Social Science, we continued with our continent and ocean study guide. These will be sent home in a few days.

In Writing, we are preparing for the next assessment which will likely occur tomorrow.

Our next Math test will likely be Thursday.

Ninety-Third Day of School

In Reading and Writing the past few days, we have been constructing and deconstructing non-fictional work and comparing the processes involved in both.

In Social Science, we have begun working on our world map study guide which will be brought home at the end of the week.

In Music, we examined music notation and disscussed nomenclature as we sang "My Country 'Tis of Thee." We discussed the meaning of the song's lyrics and it's use as a patriotic anthem.

Note: The 100th day of school will be upon us shortly. We plan to have our birthday-style celebration on that day.

Ninety-Second Day of School

In Writing today, we took some time to add typical non-fiction text features to our article.

In Engineering, we once again employed the engineering process to complete a project. In teams, we used a variety of objects to create "puff mobiles" to open our Science unit on weather, where we will explore properties of air and water and watch how these 2 weather elements interact.

In Reading, we explored an article on Martin Luther King Jr. and what it means to be a hero in our practice to articulate the main idea.

Ninetieth Day of School

We have made it throught the mid-point of the school year. (a special thank you to all of the parents who supported teachers in the past week)

So far in our reteach of informational writing, we have chosen a topic, collected information, planned and written a chapter each for 2 subtopics, used transitions between ideas, and written openings and closings.

In Visual Arts today, we learned that there were 7 main elements. We looked at works emphasizing line and began to practice our 2 types of lines.

In Social Science, we have been learning about our relative place in the Universe. We found our way from our house through neighborhood, city, county, state, country, continent, planet, solar system, and galaxy, learning the names of each. We then located our position on a map of the galaxy. We learned (or recalled) that our planet has 7 continents which we will need to be able to name and locate on a map along with the location of Los Angeles.

Eighty-Second Day of School

Both in Reading and Writing, we have been working on non-fiction selections. In Reading, we have emphasized the skill of finding the main idea. Your child should practice stating the main idea of a non-fiction selection. This is a necessary skill for moving up in TRC reading levels. A main idea should be stated in a complete sentence:

  • The main idea of the article/selection/book is that people celebrate New Year's Eve in many ways.
You will notice that the main idea of the selection we read today in class is simply stated in the second sentence of the the article.

There is no homework tonight if your child completed their research for their writing piece.

Eighty-First Day of School

For homework, please help your child with their research for their new informational piece. Everyone should have a question or 2 to answer using a digital or print source with an adult's guidance.

Unsatisfactory notices will go home this week for students at risk of earning marks of a 2 or lower on the coming progress report in the areas of Reading, Writing, or Math.
